Cowboy Star

Our third and final restaurant for San Diego Restaurant Week was Cowboy Star in downtown San Diego. We were interested in this menu because we noticed it included DESSERT for lunch too, which makes it a three course meal for only $20. Yea, I'm all over that!

Being from Texas, the cowhide-style seats in the waiting area made me feel a bit nostalgic, even if it wasn't something you'd find at MY family home. And I just love cowboy hats! Surprisingly this blogger here doesn't even have her own! On the other side of the chairs was a bar area to pass time before seating in the main area.

After we ordered, they brought out a bread appetizer. It had a sourdough texture inside but was toasty brown on the outside! I didn't take pictures but it was probably served with butter.

Our first appetizer was the Cauliflower Soup. I rarely see this on a menu so of course it was a must! The soup came out at the perfect temp and ready to eat. It had a richness and subtle cauliflower taste to all that creaminess and was topped with a few tibits of cauliflower and pepita seeds. It exceeded my expectations and I'd be willing to eat this again!

The Winter Salad was paired with a dressing that seemed to go well with the type of ingredients used. I guess I haven't had raw fennel before in a salad but luckily the licorice taste was on the mild side. The grapefruit pieces were just right for me, not too tart.

For the main course, one of us got the Grass Fed Burger. The meat was cooked medium rare and juicy without being oily. Cheddar was just perfect on this. Considering the rest of the ingredients were basic, ie lettuce, tomatoes, onions and a pickle (given to Dennis), I was content with it. I also liked the shape of the bread... it looked like a muffin at the bottom because it tapered up to a muffin top haha!

The Braised Short Ribs was our other entree choice. The succulent beef had flavor penetrating to the insides and dipped with au jus was delicious. I liked the veggies and spuds too but they weren't as roasted as at Brooklyn Girl.

Well, time for desserts, our BONUS for this trip! These are the Classic Profiteroles that I instagramed! Inside was pistachio ice cream, which did squeeze out when you bit it but OMG such a yummy in my tummy! The outer portion reminded me of eclaires!

Can anything top ice cream? Perhaps this Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding, the BEST I've had in a while! The insides were moist and scrumptious! And more chocolate ice cream on top, yes please! Winner winner chicken dinner. OMG both desserts were so good here!

So Cowboy Star was amazing and definitely our favorite spot for restaurant week. AND it happened to be the least expensive. Our waiter also made an entertaining comment about one of their best meats, the wagyu... it's like butter dressed up as a steak! Surely we have to try it one day! I see some kind of date night here in the future!
